Folarin Balogun: Nationality, Arsenal Roots and Monaco Career

Why Folarin Balogun represents the USA, how Arsenal and Reims developed his career, and what his Monaco and USMNT match records actually show.

Folarin Balogun: Nationality, Arsenal Roots and Monaco Career

Folarin Balogun is an American international striker who plays for AS Monaco. Born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents and raised in London, he developed at Arsenal before loans at Middlesbrough and Reims. His senior national team is the United States, which he began representing in 2023. This guide separates those background connections and follows the football milestones behind his career, with current club statistics checked as of 14 October 2026.

Is Folarin Balogun American, English or Nigerian?

In senior international football, Folarin Balogun represents the United States. His background also connects him to England and Nigeria: he was born in New York, grew up in London and has Nigerian parents. Those statements describe different parts of his life. The American designation on a Monaco squad page identifies his national-team connection; it does not mean that all his football training took place in the United States.

Birthplace and family background explain the three connections

Balogun was born in Brooklyn on 3 July 2001. London became the setting for his childhood and football development, including his progress through Arsenal's academy. U.S. Soccer's player profile identifies his Nigerian family background, while Monaco's biography documents his English upbringing. The connections explain why questions about his country can produce several answers, depending on whether the question concerns birthplace, heritage or sporting representation.

For a fan trying to identify the player, the distinctions are straightforward. Brooklyn answers where he was born. Arsenal and London explain much of where he learned the game. Nigerian heritage explains another family connection. The USMNT answers which senior national team he plays for. His employment in Ligue 1 adds a club competition to that picture, rather than another national-team identity. A Monaco appearance and a United States appearance belong to different teams even when both feature the same striker.

The United States became his senior national team

The decisive administrative step was announced on 16 May 2023. U.S. Soccer's announcement confirmed FIFA's approval of his one-time change of association. Balogun had represented England in official youth competition, so an approved change was required before he could begin senior international play for the United States. His earlier England appearances were youth appearances; they should not be described as an England senior career.

The United States connection was also older than the 2023 announcement. The same official account records participation with the U.S. Under-18 team in 2018, followed by further England youth football. That sequence matters because it shows how a developing player can have experience in more than one youth setup before the senior decision is settled. It does not require rewriting his English academy years or denying his family connections.

In his May 2023 interview, Balogun described a decision made with his family, pride in representing his birth country and encouragement from American supporters. Those are his stated reasons, rather than speculation that another country rejected him or a guarantee of easier selection. The choice created an opportunity to compete for the USMNT. Earning playing time and contributing in matches remained separate football tasks, which his first tournament soon put into focus.

Arsenal developed him before senior loans expanded his experience

Arsenal was Balogun's academy club and the setting for his first steps in senior professional football. His early progression was promising, but there is an important difference between becoming a first-team player on a matchday and securing a regular place over a league season. His subsequent loans make more sense when viewed as opportunities to accumulate senior experience, rather than as interruptions to a career that was already fully established in the Premier League.

His first Arsenal appearance came against Dundalk in October 2020. The club's account of that 3–0 Europa League win records his late introduction and identifies Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Nicolas Pépé as the scorers. Balogun's debut and his first senior goal were separate milestones. The goal followed against Molde in November, before he later scored and assisted in the return match against Dundalk.

That sequence is useful when evaluating a young striker. A short substitute appearance can provide a first taste of the level, while a later goal shows the ability to convert an opportunity. Neither alone establishes how a player handles weeks of selection decisions, travel and different defensive opponents. European group-stage contributions opened the door for Balogun, but his development still required a broader senior sample than those early moments supplied.

Middlesbrough was a step into regular senior football

In January 2022 he joined Middlesbrough on loan. Monaco's account of his earlier career documents this senior step and Middlesbrough's FA Cup run that season, which included eliminating Manchester United and Tottenham before reaching the quarter-finals. Those cup results belong to the team, rather than being goals or victories credited solely to Balogun. They nevertheless show the competitive setting he joined: a Championship club playing its regular league schedule while also facing Premier League opposition in knockout football.

His spell produced 18 Championship appearances and three goals, a league record documented in U.S. Soccer's career summary. The competition label matters: a total including cup appearances will be different from the Championship total. More importantly, the loan gave his career a run of senior matches before his move to France. Three goals in that period should be read alongside the change in playing environment, rather than compared directly with an academy scoring rate.

The football value of such a move extends beyond a final goals column. A striker must coordinate runs with a new group, compete for selection and respond when chances are scarce. Those are general demands of senior football, not claims that a particular training session transformed Balogun. Middlesbrough supplied an intermediate chapter between Arsenal development football and the season at Reims that would make his finishing visible across a full top-flight campaign.

Reims made his Ligue 1 scoring ability visible

The 2022/23 loan at Stade de Reims was the clearest early demonstration that Balogun could score regularly in a senior top-flight league. He was still an Arsenal player, but his weekly football belonged to a French club with its own teammates, coaching staff and competitive objectives. That distinction matters: the season was a Reims achievement in performance terms, even though Arsenal retained his contract until the subsequent permanent transfer.

The 2022/23 total was 21 league goals

His completed Ligue 1 record was 21 goals in 37 appearances, as recorded in U.S. Soccer's career profile. Monaco's biography gives 22 goals in 39 games for the wider Reims spell. The totals answer different questions: the first is league football, while the second includes other competitions. A supporter looking up his Reims scoring should retain the competition beside the number rather than treat 21 and 22 as interchangeable.

The league total also represents a full season of opportunities. It provides a much broader view of senior output than a short debut or a few substitute appearances at Arsenal. Appearances still do not equal full matches, and goals alone cannot measure every part of a forward's contribution. Nevertheless, a striker scoring repeatedly across a French league campaign had moved beyond academy promise and isolated first-team cameos. This was the evidence that made the Reims chapter important to his next club and international steps.

Why that season mattered beyond the goal count

The league's retrospective feature on successful striker loans describes his preparation for the move. Balogun considered how Reims played and identified quick transitions as a potential fit for his strengths. He also described adapting to a new country and an understanding that he needed to earn his place. Those details make the loan a deliberate football decision, rather than an assumption that leaving England would automatically produce goals.

A specific example came at the Stade Louis-II on 12 March 2023. Reims beat Monaco 1–0, with Balogun scoring in the 51st minute. Monaco's own match report describes him getting beyond the offside line for the winner. It also records Alexander Nübel denying him before half-time and again late in the match. The winner was decisive, but the other chances show a forward remaining involved across the contest rather than appearing for one isolated shot.

That example connects the general description of transition football with a concrete result. A run beyond a defence has value only if the pass, timing and finish work together. In this match the combination supplied the only goal, while Reims also needed to withstand Monaco's attempts at the other end. It was a team victory with a clear individual scoring contribution. The fact that Monaco later became his employer adds interest to the chronology; it does not establish that this single match caused the transfer.

Reims therefore gave Balogun more than an attractive season total. It supplied a sustained top-flight setting in which his movement and finishing could affect results, including an away win against a strong French opponent. The next challenge would be transferring that contribution to a permanent club role, with a different attacking group and expectations built around Monaco's own league campaign.

Monaco turned the French loan into a permanent club chapter

Monaco announced Balogun's permanent arrival from Arsenal on 30 August 2023. The official signing announcement distinguished this move from his two earlier loans. He had already learned the French league at Reims, but now joined a new permanent employer. Familiarity with Ligue 1 opponents did not remove the need to adapt to different teammates, attacking relationships and selection decisions.

A permanent transfer also changes how the career is followed. Reims was a season-long chapter with an expected return to Arsenal's decision-making. Monaco became the club responsible for building his continuing first-team role. That does not guarantee a fixed starting place: the forward still has to contribute within the available attacking group. It does, however, make his Monaco record a distinct stage, rather than an extension of the Reims loan under another shirt.

One documented period of strong form came in February 2026. In Monaco's monthly review, the club recorded four goals and named him the supporters' February MVP. He scored twice against PSG in a Champions League first leg that Monaco nevertheless lost 3–2. Against Lens, his goal helped begin the recovery from a two-goal deficit to a 3–2 win. He then opened the scoring in a 2–0 victory over Angers.

These games show why a striker's contribution and the team's result need to be considered together. A brace did not secure victory against PSG; a single goal formed part of a collective comeback at Lens; the Angers opener helped establish a winning position. The supporter award reflected appreciation within Monaco, not an official claim that he was the best player in the entire league. Each performance belonged to a different match situation, making the period more informative than an unlabelled four-goal total.

Current numbers need their own season and minutes

The 2026/27 league snapshot is a separate, much smaller sample. As of 14 October 2026, ESPN's Ligue 1 profile lists two substitute appearances, no starts, no goals and no assists. FotMob's match record gives 14 minutes against Lens and 32 against Toulouse, totalling 46 minutes. Monaco's own current profile also lists two appearances and 46 minutes.

Those figures are useful for identifying his actual league involvement so far. They are insufficient on their own to explain why that involvement was limited or to predict how the rest of his season will unfold. A zero in the goals column after two short appearances is a different context from a full campaign of starts. Without a confirmed explanation, it should not automatically become a claim about an injury, a coach's opinion or a transfer that has supposedly been completed.

The relevant next step for a supporter is to follow the club's confirmed squad and match records. The Ligue 1 schedule identifies upcoming league games, while the current season's results supply their outcomes. Keep that developing record separate from February's completed performances and from his United States games. It is the combination of season, competition, minutes and role that makes a current statistic meaningful.

His early USMNT goals showed what the choice meant on the pitch

Balogun's United States debut arrived in a competitive rivalry match, rather than a low-pressure introduction. He started the 3–0 win over Mexico in Las Vegas on 15 June 2023 and played 75 minutes. The official semifinal report credits Christian Pulisic with two goals and Ricardo Pepi with the third. Balogun did not score in his debut, but he entered a team that immediately advanced to a tournament final.

Three days later he scored his first senior international goal against Canada. In the 18 June final report, Gio Reyna supplied both assists in the 2–0 victory: first for Chris Richards, then for Balogun in the 34th minute. The account describes the striker protecting his position against a defender and finishing first time with his right foot. That was a concrete contribution to a title in only his second USMNT appearance.

The Reyna connection is an important part of the goal's meaning. Choosing the national team settled eligibility; combining with the team's creators made that choice productive on the field. A centre-forward needs service timed to his movement, and the creator needs a target able to receive under pressure. In that final, the relationship produced a goal. It was an early sign of how Balogun's finishing could complement an existing attack rather than replace the work of everyone around him.

His tournament scoring continued at the 2024 Copa América. Against Bolivia in Arlington on 23 June, Pulisic opened the scoring and then supplied the pass for Balogun's 44th-minute goal in a 2–0 win. The Bolivia match recap describes Pulisic moving centrally and drawing defenders before finding the striker. Here the combination involved a different provider from the Canada final, illustrating another route for Balogun to receive and finish.

The next group match supplied a different outcome. The United States lost 2–1 to Panama in Atlanta on 27 June, despite Balogun's opening goal in the 22nd minute. U.S. Soccer's report records Tim Weah's dismissal four minutes earlier and the combination between Balogun and Antonee Robinson that preceded the goal. The scorer was not the player sent off. His finish briefly gave a ten-man team the lead, but Panama's subsequent goals changed the result.

Together, these matches offer a fairer picture than a claim that a national-team switch guarantees success. Balogun contributed quickly to a regional title, scored in a later major tournament and also experienced a defeat in which his goal was insufficient. The setting, teammates and match state shaped what the scoring contribution achieved. His American international identity is settled by representation; his standing as a forward continues to be built through performances.

That is the thread connecting his career. Arsenal supplied the early development, Middlesbrough added senior experience, Reims demonstrated sustained French league scoring, and Monaco became the permanent club chapter. The United States provided a separate international stage. Keeping each chapter's dates, competition and actual match contribution in view explains Balogun more accurately than treating birthplace, academy club and current employer as competing answers to the same question.
